Flores

an island in Indonesia, in the group of Lesser Sunda Islands. Flores, whose name, given by Portuguese navigators, reflects the island’s rich flora, has an area of 15,600 sq km. Coral reefs stretch along a large portion of the island. A mountain range, which rises to an elevation of 2,400 m, extends across the island from west to east. It is composed mainly of andesites and basalts. In the south the mountains form steep cliffs that drop sharply to the sea. The northern slopes are gentler; there are hilly plains along the northern coast. Flores has more than ten active volcanoes, including Lewotobi, Inerie, and Keli Mutu. The climate is monsoon and subequatorial, with an annual precipitation of 1,000 to 1,400 mm; the dry season lasts from April through November. The mountains are covered with evergreen and hardwood monsoon forests; there are extensive savannas, consisting of alang-alang. Crops include rice, corn, tobacco, soybeans, peanuts, coconut palms, and coffee. The population also engages in stock raising and fishing. The main cities are Ende and Ruteng.
