fluid coupling

[¦flü·əd ¦kəp·liŋ]
(mechanical engineering)
A device for transmitting rotation between shafts by means of the acceleration and deceleration of a fluid such as oil. Also known as hydraulic coupling.

Fluid coupling

A device for transmitting rotation between shafts by means of the acceleration and deceleration of a hydraulic fluid. Structurally, a fluid coupling consists of an impeller on the input or driving shaft and a runner on the output or driven shaft. The two contain the fluid (see illustration). Impeller and runner are bladed rotors, the impeller acting as a pump and the runner reacting as a turbine. Basically, the impeller accelerates the fluid from near its axis, at which the tangential component of absolute velocity is low, to near its periphery, at which the tangential component of absolute velocity is high. This increase in velocity represents an increase in kinetic energy. The fluid mass emerges at high velocity from the impeller, impinges on the runner blades, gives up its energy, and leaves the runner at low velocity. See Hydraulics

Chinese Select Fluid Couplings for a Large Conveyor Drive
relies on Voith fluid couplings. A total of three are used underground in the 4.8-megawatt (MW) drive for the main belt conveyor at the Xiegou No.
12 coal mine, the fluid couplings were operated in the partially filled mode during commissioning to be sure that the belt was tracking properly.
"Proven reliability is why we absolutely wanted to have Voith fluid couplings in the new conveyor drives as well," said Tatra Muis, senior manager of maintenance for Bukit Asam.
The Voith fluid couplings are well suited for use in extreme environments and are completely insensitive to harsh conditions like dust, dirt and humidity.
The controlled application of torque, along with the torsional dampening characteristics of the fill controlled fluid couplings mean that users can expect the maximum possible life out of all drive components and AFC chain.
"Based on the hydrodynamic principle, the fluid couplings protect the whole drive train from overload situations, which often happen at Chang Ping," said Mao Weihong, head of the mechanical and electrical department of Chang Ping.
