Fr. Indochine, former federation of states, SE Asia. It comprised the French colony of Cochin China and the French protectorates of Tonkin, Annam, Laos, and Cambodia (Cochin China, Tonkin, and Annam were later united to form Vietnam). The capital was Hanoi.

from the 1880’s to the late 1940’s the name of the French colonial holdings situated in the eastern part of the Indochinese peninsula and including the territories of Vietnam (the protectorates of Annam and Tonkin and the colony of Cochin China), Cambodia, and Laos (beginning in the 1890’s). As a result of the revolution of August 1945 in Vietnam, the domination of the imperialists was overthrown in that country; in 1953 Cambodia became a sovereign state, as did Laos in 1954.
