It is the successor to French Somaliland (later called the French Territory of the Afars and Issas), which was created in the first half of the 19th century as a result of French interest in the Horn of Africa.
The British officially notified the signatory powers to the Berlin Conference of 1885, on July 20, 1887, that a British protectorate had been formed and participated in the demarcation of borders between Ethiopia, Djibouti (French Somaliland), Somaliland (British Somaliland), Somalia (Italian Somaliland), and Kenya.
