Future-proofing

Attempting to anticipate the future in order to minimize possible negative consequences. In the building sector, future-proofing is demonstrated by sustainable buildings that use less water and energy than conventional buildings, thereby providing a buffer against future increases in water- and energy-service costs and protecting against service shortages.
