Gao
a city in eastern Mali, situated on the left bank of the Niger River along a trans-Saharan route. Population, 15,400 (1967). The city has an airport.
Gao is the administrative and commercial center of the Gao region, noted for its production of livestock and grain. From the beginning of the 11th century until the end of the 16th, Gao was the capital of the Songhai state. A slaughterhouse has been built there.
