Gennargentu

 

mountains in the central part of the island of Sardinia, Italy. Maximum height, 1,834 m (Mt. La Marmora, the highest point on the island). They are made up mainly of granites. The slopes are mostly rounded and covered with Mediterranean shrub formations and in the western part by rare chestnut forests.

The parts of the island that aren't covered with myrtle are a patchwork of fields surrounding the grim grey peaks of the Gennargentu and Barbargia mountains.
A good example is Lawrence's description of travel from Cagliari to Sorgono as the little train leaves the malarial coastal plain and enters the forest of Gennargentu: "At first it is only hazel-thickets, miles of hazel-thickets, all wild, with a few black cattle trying to peep at us out of the green myrtle and arbutus scrub which forms the undergrowth: and a couple of rare, wild peasants peering at the train" (Sardinia 87).
Shepherds in Ogliastra, a central highland region, have used a similar tactical appropriation of the Romantic paradigm in the political struggle against the construction of a national park in the Gennargentu range.
