Whipple, George Mathews

 

Born Sept. 15,1842, in Teddington; died Feb. 8,1893, in Richmond. English geophysicist.

In 1858, Whipple began working at the magnetic and meteorological observatory in Kew (near London), and in 1876 he became its superintendent. His works dealt with gravimetry, meteorology, geomagnetics, and meteorological instrument design.
