A family of dicotyledonous plants in the order Geraniales in which the fruit is beaked, styles are usually united, and the leaves have stipules.

a family of dicotyledonous plants, mainly herbs; only a few are semishrubs and shrubs. For the most part the leaves have stipules. The blossoms are regular, rarely more or less irregular, are usually gathered in cymose inflorescences, and have a corolla that is predominantly red or blue-violet. There are approximately eight genera and 800 species, mainly in temperate regions; only a few are found in the tropics and subtropics. In the USSR there are three or four genera and over 75 species, the majority of which belong to the genera Geranium and Erodium.
