Giunter, Nikolai Maksimovich

 

Born Dec. 5 (17), 1871, in St. Petersburg; died May 4, 1941, in Leningrad. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1924).

Giunter’s early works were devoted to the general theory of differential equations, both ordinary and partial differential equations. A large cycle of his works dealt with various questions of mathematical physics. He was the first to provide a rigorous and systematic exposition of the contemporary theory of potential (1934). Giunter made broad use of the ideas and methods of the theory of functions of a real variable and functional analysis (domain functions, Stieltje’s integral) in solving problems of mathematical physics.
