glass cockpit[¦glas ′käk‚pit]
An aircraft cockpit that has a number of multicolored displays instead of conventional instruments.
i. An aircraft brake malfunction in which a hard, glasslike coating forms on the brake disc surface, causing the brakes to chatter, squeal, and be less effective.
ii. The sheet or thin coating of ice that forms when rain falls on surfaces with subfreezing temperatures and freezes. There is little or no air between the layers of ice. If this coating becomes thick, it can significantly affect the aircraft performance because it causes additional weight and deformation of the aerodynamic surfaces. This can lead to drag and the loss of lift. Also known as clear ice and freezing rain.
