Born Oct. 11, 1895, in Split. Yugoslavian (Croatian) composer and conductor.
In 1920, Gotovac studied at the Academy of Music in Vienna under I. Marx. During 1923–67 he was conductor of the opera company of the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb. He made his debut as a composer in 1916 with vocal music (choruses and art songs). Gotovac’s music has a vividly expressed national character. He has composed six operas, which are based on folklore and reflect events from the life of the people (including Ero From the Other World, 1935). Gotovac is also the composer of several programmatic orchestral works (The Symphonic Kolo, 1926, and three symphonic poems) and songs and adaptations of folk tunes.
