Governador Valadares

(go͝ovərnədo͞or` vələthä`rəs), city (1996 pop. 231,077), Minas Gerais state, SE Brazil, on the Doce River. Beans, rice, sugarcane, and coffee are raised, and cattle are bred. Food processing, lumbering, and the mining of mica and beryl are also important industries.

Governador Valadares

 

a city in southeastern Brazil, in the state of Minas Gerais. Population of the municipio (county), 123,000 (1967). The city, which is a port on the Doce River and a highway junction, also has a railroad station. It is the center of a mining region (mainly the extraction of mica, which is exported to the USA, and beryl) and a commercial center; it also has woodworking and sugar industries.

The meteorite, called Governador Valadares, was found in Brazil in 1958 and was described by the Smithsonian Institute last year as the "least understood of the Martian meteorites," according to the Phillips catalogue for the one-day sale.
