Heerlen

(hār`lən), city (1994 pop. 95,794), Limburg prov., SE Netherlands. It is an industrial and transportation center. Manufactures include textiles and food products. The city was a major coal-mining center from the late 19th cent. to the early 1970s, when mining operations were closed.

a city in the southern Netherlands, in Limburg Province. Population, 72,300 (1975). A railroad junction, Heerlen is the industrial center of the Limburg Coalfield, from which hard coal is extracted. The city manufactures coke by-products, electrical equipment, glass, pottery, clothing, and tobacco products.
