Gwynn, Tony

(Anthony Keith Gwynn), 1960–2014, American baseball player and coach, b. Los Angeles. He played baseball and basketball at San Diego State Univ., and had a record 590 career assists as a point guard there. In 1981 Gwynn was drafted by both professional baseball's San Diego Padres and basketball's San Diego Clippers. In his long career (1982–2001) as a right fielder for the Padres, the left-hander won a record eight National League batting championships (tied with Honus WagnerWagner, Honus

), had 3,141 career hits and a .338 career batting average, and played in 15 All-Star games. "Mr. Padre" was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. Gwynn was the baseball coach at San Diego State from 2001 until his death.
