HDMI 1.4

A major upgrade to the HDMI interface, introduced in 2009. HDMI 1.4 added home theater enhancements and new cables, while using plugs and sockets that are compatible with older HDMI cables. Support for 3D formats (for more 3D, see HDMI 1.4a), 4K resolution and camera colors was included (sYCC601, AdobeRGB, and AdobeYCC601 color spaces render still images more accurately on TVs). HDMI 1.4 allows the TV to optimize picture settings by letting the source device declare its content type, such as a movie, game or stills.

Audio Return Channel (ARC) for Home Theaters
Starting in HDMI 1.4, the audio return channel allows the TV to become the central hub in the home theater. As HDTVs include more input ports, and as more sources are built into the TV, the TV set becomes the natural central switching point. For more details, see HDMI ARC.

Ethernet Over HDMI
TVs, Blu-ray/DVD players and other A/V equipment are increasingly network enabled. HDMI 1.4 includes 100 Mbps Ethernet, which allows all HDMI 1.4-equipped A/V equipment to reach the Internet through the TV's connection. This is why HDMI 1.4 cables are different; wires were rearranged.

Automotive Connection System
For automobile entertainment systems, HDMI 1.4 provides an interlocking Type E plug and socket to connect audio and video throughout a vehicle. See HDMI and HDMI cable types.

Type D Connector
HDMI 1.3 added the Type C Mini connector for camcorders, and HDMI 1.4 added the Type D Micro for handhelds such as cellphones and MP3 players.
