The deal covers six Class-214 air-independent propulsion (AIP) submarines by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW), a part of the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipbuilding group.
The orders were received from HDW, the German shipbuilder, and are for the supply of submarine batteries for propulsion power on diesel electric vessels with several navies worldwide.
German shipbuilder, Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW), has led the way in developing and using fuel cell based AIP systems in submarines.
Through a partnership with submarine manufacturer HDW, the equipment will be used to fuel both navies' fuel cell submarines, which generate energy without leaving a heat or noise signature along their routes, while also remaining submerged for longer periods.
