Hammerfest
(hä`mərfĕst), town (1995 pop. 9,561), Finnmark co., N Norway, on Kvaløy island. It is the northernmost town of Europe, but its harbor is always ice-free. Tourists are attracted by its uninterrupted daylight from May 17 to July 29. There are fish-processing plants. Hammerfest
a city and port in the extreme north of Norway, in the county of Finnmark; situated on Lake Kvaløya. Population, 7,000 (1970). Located just under 70° 40’ N lat., Hammerfest is the northernmost city in Europe. It is a center of the fishing and fish-processing industries. Dried fish, fish oil, and fertilizers are exported.
