A look with a loupe at some of the specimens reveals attached microcrystals of trona, halite and hanksite
Hanks (after whom hanksite
was later named), who was to become the first state mineralogist in 1880, was sent to investigate, and he became the assayer for the San Carlos mine.
At Trona he would even stoop to collecting crystals of hanksite
and halite yet one more time.
