Harcourt, Alfred

(1881–1954) publisher; born in Ulster County, N.Y. In 1919 he cofounded the firm that eventually became Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. As its president until 1941, he used his acumen and taste to acquire fine authors and make the company prosper.
