a department in France in the eastern part of the Massif Central. Area, 5,000 sq km. Population, 207,000 (1972). Administrative center, Le Puy. Pasture livestock are raised, and grains, vegetables, and fodder are cultivated. The garment and food industries are not strongly developed; lace is manufactured.
