The main taxonomically identified material from Lower Cretaceous beds includes several specimens found in layers of the Hauterivian of western Russia (Fischer et al., 2015; Fischer et al., 2017), of the Barremian and Aptian of Colombia (Hampe, 1992; 2005; Paramo-Fonseca et al., 2016; Gomez-Perez and Noe, 2017); and of the Aptian and Albian of Australia (Longman, 1924; Kear, 2003).
A pollen character that might link Appomattoxia with Amborella is a tendency for the tectum to develop low verrucae, which could be homologous with the larger verrucae that are characteristic of Amborella and dispersed Hauterivian and Barremian pollen described by Hughes and McDougall (1987) and Hughes (1994) as Hauterivian-cacfew/c (Doyle, 2001; Hesse, 2001).

Tawillah (Hauterivian to Maastrichian) group consists mainly of fluvial to continental clastics mainly sandstones inter-bedded with siltstone, marl and shale.
It belongs to the Hauterivian on the geological timescale.
A second rift phase (Hauterivian to Parremian) was associated with local reactivation of some graben-bounding fault systems.

Lithofacies stacking patterns, palynofacies trends, and electrical log trends demonstrate the presence of one major regressive-transgressive cycle from the level of the "O-Marker" (Lower Hauterivian), reaching its regressive acme (sequence boundary) in the lower part of the Upper Missisauga Formation (Barremian).
