Southernmost of the Islands, bordered on the north by Alenuihaha Channel; county is coextensive with the island. Established 1905 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: In Hawaii the name has no meaning, but in the rest of Polynesia it is the name of the underworld or of the ancestral home. Sometimes translated as 'beyond the doors of death.' Called the "Big Island."
