Though the violent acts at issue in this chapter are certainly no less horrible and socially significant than the contemporaneously enacted violent acts that more closely fit traditional notions of terrorism, the manner in which much racial violence was enacted-fictionally or actually-in the nineteenth century seems to differ too significantly to be grouped under the same umbrella that includes the Haymarket Square bombing.
