Haystack Observatory

A facility in Massachusetts, NW of Boston, run by the Northeast Radio Observatory Corporation (NEROC) under agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It has a 36.6-meter radio dish consisting of 96 stiff panel sections. The telescope is housed in a 45.7-meter diameter raydome, which reduces the effects of wind and rain; has a Cassegrain focus and an altazimuth mounting. It was originally used for radar astronomy, but is used mostly for spectral-line and VLBI work. It can observe in a selection of wavebands between 0.3 and 18 cm. At the shorter wavelengths the secondary mirror is deformed to take account of errors in the shape of the dish surface. The site contains a number of other radio and optical telescopes and radar antennas.

All the information somewhere in the range of 500 terabytes for every station will be gathered and flown on jetliners to the MIT Haystack Observatory in Massachusetts, where it will be prepared by supercomputers, as per NCA.
The amount of information obtained from the EHT will be so immense that it is too large to transfer digitally - it will be stored physically and taken to the Max Planck Institute in Germany, and the Haystack Observatory in Massachusetts for processing.
Under this contract the Haystack Observatory at MIT shall provide construction and installation of the signal chains for three Next Generation Geodetic VLBI antennas and validation of the completed systems; operations support in the form of correlation of geodetic VLBI data, operation of the Westford antenna, and engineering support for the NASA geodetic network; and continued development of the next generation geodetic VLBI systems.

Washington, September 28 ( ANI ): An international team, led by researchers at MIT's Haystack Observatory, has for the first time measured the radius of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy-the closest distance at which matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.
