A diffuse white ring surrounding the shadow cast by the observer's head upon a dew-covered lawn when the solar elevation is low and, therefore, the distance from observer to shadow is great.

This light, brightest toward the shadow and rapidly fading away, is called the heiligenschein, German for "holy glory."
