Heywood, Charles
(1839–1915) marine officer; born in Waterville, Maine. Appointed colonel commandant in 1891, he improved Marine Corps administration and oversaw an expansion in which the service quadrupled in size—to 7,800 officers and men.The Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography, by John S.
