Historic district ordinance

Historic district ordinance

A municipal law designating and protecting an area of significant historical, architectural, cultural or other special character, or authorizing the general establishment of historic districts, typically establishing a review commission, procedures, and an appeals process. It sometimes grants the supervising agency power to restrict demolition or alteration within an area. It parallels the goals of zoning laws to regulate growth and to control the distribution of people and traffic. It protects environmental amenities and keeps them for the public enjoyment.
