Born Feb. 2, 1892, in Sonneberg; died there Jan. 2, 1968. German astronomer (German Democratic Republic). Member of the Leopoldine German Academy of Naturalists in Halle (1936) and member of the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic.
Hoffmeister was director of the observatory in Sonneberg. His works were primarily devoted to variable stars and meteors. Hoffmeister discovered several thousand new variable stars and studied the variations in their brightness; he also established their velocities relative to the sun.
Hoffmeister was awarded the National Prize in 1951.
