Holder, Nancy

(pop culture)

Nancy Holder is the prolific author of a set of novels and several nonfiction books related to the popular vampire television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. She was born Nancy Lindsay Jones in Los Altos, California on August 29, 1953. Her father was a navy officer, and she grew up in California and Japan. She left school at sixteen to study ballet in Germany, but several years later returned to California and studied communications at the University of California—San Diego, graduating summa cum laude. Her daughter Belle Claire Christine Holder was born in 1996.

Holder published her first novel in 1983 under her family name. Then just as the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series began its television run, she was invited as one of the authors who would write the spin-off novels, both original stories and adaptations of the episodes of the series. Almost half of those novels with be co-authored with friend and colleague Christopher Golden, including the Sunnydale Year Book, while several were also written with Jeff Mariotte. In one sense, novels that are part of franchises are hardly the place where a fiction writer shows their greatest creativity as they must be developed according to strict guidelines of, in this case, the television show, and on what any given character may or may not be or do. At the same time, however, such writing demands a set of special skills to be able to write with a creative edge and in an entertaining fashion while maintaining the guidelines. Holder has shown a special ability in this regard, and, in addition to Buffy and Angel, has written for a variety of television franchises. In between these assignments, she has been able to produce additional novels on self chosen topics.

She and Golden also co-wrote the first volume of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Watcher’s Guide, the first of several semi-official books about the show. Holder joined with her colleagues Jeff Mariotte and Maryelizabeth Hart to produce Volume 2 of the Watchers Guide and Angel the Casefiles. In the process of doing the many novels and working on the Watcher’s guides, she became somewhat of an expert on the show and was invited to contribute essays to two of the nonfiction anthologies on Buffy and Angel. She was one of the featured speakers at the Slayage scholars conference in Nashville in 2004.

Holder is a four-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award given by the Horror Writer Association for superior achievement in horror writing, a sign of the respect for Holder among her professional colleagues. She occasionally teaches courses in writing and on occasion on Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the University of California—San Diego. She maintains her Internet presence at http://www.nancyholder.com/.
