In west-central MS, southeast of Greenville; organized Mar 28, 1918 from Holmes, Washington, Yazoo, and Sunflower counties. Name Origin: For Benjamin Grubb Humphreys (1808-82), general in the Confederate army, MS legislator, and governor (1865-66)

At 51, he had been a cofounder of the local branch of the NAACP and was the first black since Reconstruction to register to vote in Humphreys County, Mississippi.
