On the central eastern shore of NC on Pamlico Sound, northeast of Jacksonville; organized Dec 3, 1705 (prior to statehood) as Wickham Precinct of Bath District; name changed in 1712. Name Origin: Either for Edward Hyde (1661-1723), 3rd Earl of Clarendon, a colonial governor of NJ and NY (1701-08); or for Edward Hyde (1650-1712), deputy governor, acting governor, and governor of NC (1709-12). Originally for the manor home of the Archdale family in Buckinghamshire, England
