In 2001, when negotiations on divestment was in progress there was reports saying that leading international broker George Soros agreed to buy the 51% stake at US$ 750 million and had established a new company in Indonesia called PT Intan Bumi Inti Perdana (IBIP) to cooperate with the East Kalimantan regional administration.
For that purpose Soros, who was once accused of being the behind the regional crisis in 1997, has established a new company in Indonesia namely PT Intan Bumi Inti Perdana (IBIP) in cooperation with the East Kalimantan regional administration.
IBIP was to be financed by a vehicle company Batavia Investment Company, which is owned by Soros himself and Harry Tanoesoedibyo, a businessman from Surabaya.
Soros, who was accused by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Muhammad of being behind the regional financial crisis in 1997 had established an Indonesian based company PT Intan Bumi Inti Perdana (IBIP) to acquire the stake in coperation with the East Kalimantan regional administration.
