The optometrists involved in these triage referral clinics hold Independent Prescriber (IP) status and the Foundation Trust has authorised special dispensation for them (as well as an A&E nurse consultant) to prescribe fluorescein for intravenous use, for the purpose of undertaking urgent diagnostic IVFA. This enables optometrists to independently instigate and interpret IVFAs, depending on other clinical findings and OCT results, with the minimum of delay.
