Born circa 1016; died June 24, 1106. Prominent member of the Kievan aristocracy; tysiatskii (chiliarch). Son of Vyshata, who was a voevoda (military commander) under Iaroslav the Wise.
In the 1070’s, Ian Vyshatich collected tribute for Sviatoslav Ia-roslavich in Beloozero and put down an uprising of smerdy (feudally dependent peasants) there. He took part in campaigns against the Polovtsy and in princely internecine strife. Ian Vyshatich’s stories about the past were made use of by Russian chroniclers and became part of the Primary Chronicle.
