IP

(1) See intellectual property, iPhone, IP Code, identity provider, intentional programming, image processing and IndustryPack.

(2) (Internet Protocol) The communications technology used in almost every type of data network: local (LAN), wide area (WAN) and Internet. The global standard and part of the TCP/IP protocol, IP is technically only the network layer, which is responsible for sending data between networks. However, the term often implies the entire TCP/IP suite, which ensures that data are transmitted correctly from one computer to another. For details, see TCP/IP. See LAN, WAN and Internet.

Just the IP Address
IP very often does not refer to the network technology. Most of the time, it is shorthand for "IP address," which is a number assigned to every laptop and desktop computer, server, router, smartphone and tablet in a TCP/IP network. The question "what's the IP?" means "what is the IP address currently assigned to the device?" See IP address, Internet Protocol and IP network.
