Molding metal, plastic, or nonplastic ceramic shapes by injecting a measured quantity of the molten material into dies.

Injection Molding

 

(of polymers), a method for the production of articles of various shapes from plastics (thermoplastic and thermosetting materials) and rubber blends in which the material is heated and softened (plasticized) in the heated injection cylinder of the molding machine, from which it is injected into the mold under the pressure generated by a worm gear or piston. After cooling (in the case of thermoplastic materials), hardening (in the case of thermosetting materials), or vulcanization (in the case of rubber blends), the material retains the desired shape and dimensions. The method is suitable for processing thermoplastics to produce articles ranging from 0.1 to 30,000 cu cm in volume, as well as specially formulated thermosetting resins and rubber blends to produce articles with a volume of up to 3,000 cu cm. The advantages of the method as compared to other methods of molding polymers are high productivity and good quality of the resulting products.
