Inter-American Regional Labor Organization

Inter-American Regional Labor Organization

(Organizatión Regional Interamericana de Trabajadores, ORIT), a regional organization of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. It was founded in 1951 in Mexico on the initiative of the American Federation of Labor (USA).

Trade union organizations of the western hemisphere are affiliated with ORIT, and the AFL-CIO plays a leading role in it. The organization follows a reformist policy of class cooperation. Between 1969 and 1971 several large organizations—of Brazil, Chile, and Peru—withdrew from ORIT. The Chilean organization joined again in September 1973. ORIT claimed a membership of 28 million in 1974. The executive council of ORIT is located in Mexico City.
