In west-central NC, north of Charlotte; organized Nov 3, 1788 (prior to statehood) from Rowan County. Name Origin: For James Iredell (1751-99), NC attorney general (1779), delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1788, and associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1790-99)
