Itapecurú

 

a river in northeastern Brazil. The Itapecurú is about 650 km long and drains an area of about 40, 000 sq km. The river rises in the Serra do Itapecurú on the northern rim of the Brazilian Plateau and flows into the São José Bay of the Atlantic. The Itapecurú is fed by rainwater, and high water occurs between March and May. The average discharge is less than 100 cu m per sec. The city of Codó lies on the river.

We captured 57 adult fish using fishing net: 32 Nile tilapia and 25 hybrid tambacu, at fish farming employing net cages in the lower stretch from Itapecuru river (Maranhao State) and at ground ponds located in the same county, supplied by water from this river.
This species is widely distributed in the Brazilian state of Maranhao, which represents an area of transition between the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil to the east and the exuberant Amazon rainforest to the west, and a complex hydrographic system dominated by perennial rivers such as the Parnaiba, Itapecuru, Mearim, and Pindare.
