Ives, Joseph Christmas

(1828–68) explorer, soldier; born in New York City. He commanded an exploration of the Colorado River (1857–58) and wrote a classic description of that area. He was the engineer and architect of the Washington National Monument (1859–60) and he served as an engineer and aide in the Confederate army (1861–65).
