Iziaslav Mstislavich

Born circa 1097; died 1154. Prince in old Rus’; eldest son of Mstislav Vladimirovich, prince of Novgorod.

Iziaslav Mstislavich was prince of Vladimir-Volyn from 1134 and of Pereiaslav from 1143. As the result of an uprising in Kiev in 1146 against the princes of the line of Oleg, Iziaslav Mstislavich became grand prince. He waged a protracted struggle over Kiev with Iurii Dolgorukii, the prince of Suzdal’, and with the descendants of Prince Oleg. During the political struggle he severed ecclesiastical ties with Constantinople and in 1147 appointed the monk Clement of Smolensk metropolitan of Kiev.
