Jensen, Jorgen


Born Jan. 18, 1920, in Copenhagen. Figure in the Danish working-class movement.

The son of a worker, Jensen has been a participant in the trade union movement in Denmark since 1940. He joined the Communist Party of Denmark (CPD) in 1945 and was one of the leaders of the All-Danish Committee for Peace from 1952 to 1962. In 1962 he was elected chairman of a division of the metalworkers’ trade union of the Lyngby District of Copenhagen, and in 1969 he became chairman of the automotive repair workers’ trade union. Since his election to the Central Committee of the CPD in 1955, Jensen has served on the Executive Committee of the CPD and has headed the CPD Trade Unions Commission. In December 1977 he was elected party chairman by a plenum of the Central Committee of the CPD.

Jensen, who was first elected to the Folketing (Parliament) in 1975, was named parliamentary speaker for the CPD in 1977.
