Jochi
Date of birth unknown; died around 1227. Leading Mongol military commander; eldest son of Genghis Khan and one of the major implementers of his military plans.
Jochi took part in the conquest of China (1211-15), Middle Asia (1219-21), and Desht-i-Kipchak (the steppe and desert from the Syr Darya to the Danube). In Genghis Khan’s partition of the conquered lands (1224), he received the region between the Irtysh and Ural rivers and farther to the west as his allotment. He died without having undertaken his planned campaign against Eastern Europe. According to some sources, he was killed by the secret order of Genghis Khan, who suspected him of wanting to break away.
