Jugnauth, Anerood,1930–, Mauritian political leader, prime minister of Mauritius (1982–95, 2000–2003, 2014–17). Trained as a lawyer, he was first elected to the National Assembly in 1963 as a candidate of the Independent Forward Block, and subsequently has been a member of the All Hindu Congress (1965–70), the Mauritian Militant Movement (1970–82), and the Mauritius Socialist Movement (MSM; 1982–). Jugnauth also served as minister of labor (1963–67), of home affairs (2014–17), and of defense (2014–19). Upon his resignation as prime minister in 2017, he was succeeded by his son, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, 1961–, also a lawyer. First elected to the National Assembly in 2000, he became leader of the MSM in 2003, and has served as deputy prime minister (2003–5, 2010–11) and minister of home affairs (2017–), of defense (2019–), and of finance (2003–5, 2009–11, 2016–19).
