Kafan

Kafan
a city (a settlement until 1938) in the Armenian SSR. It is located on the southeastern slopes of the Zangezur Mountain Range at an elevation of 800 m, in the valley of the Vokhcha River, a tributary of the Araks River. Kafan is the terminal station on a branch of the Baku-Yerevan railroad line. Population, 31,000 (1971).
Kafan is the center of a mining industry. Copper ores are extracted nearby, and there is a copper-ore combine, an ore-dressing plant, and a furniture factory in the city. Enterprises of the food industry include a meat-packing plant, a cannery, and a milk plant. Kafan’s educational institutions include a mining and metallurgical technicum, a medical school, and a music school. There is also a dramatic theater in the city.
