Kennewick

(kĕn`əwĭk), city (1990 pop. 42,155), Benton co., SE Wash., on the Columbia River near the influx of the Snake River, in an irrigated farm and vineyard region; inc. 1904. With Richland and Pasco, it is part of a tricity regional economic unit. Among the crops processed in the city are vegetables, potatoes, sugar beets, cherries, corn, wheat, and grapes. Cattle are raised, and machinery, metal products, textiles, fertilizers, and electronics are manufactured. The U.S. Department of Energy's nearby Hanford Reservation (established during World War II) and various hydroelectric dams and power plants on the Columbia River are also important to the economy.
