In south-central IA, north of Ottumwa; established Dec 21, 1837 (prior to statehood) from Washington County. Name Origin: For Keokuk (c. 1780-1848), the chief of the Sac and Fox Indians at the time the first settlers arrived. His name was originally Kiyokaga 'he who moves around alert.'
