In January 1974, Hawaii Business wrote about an unusual structure and a new type of retailing rising in Kakaako, across from
Kewalo Basin. The Ward Warehouse, which would be completed later that year, was slated to combine retail, wholesale and light industrial uses in its five wooden, warehouselike buildings.
