a city (since 1931) under republic (ASSR) jurisdiction and the administrative center of Khasav”urt Raion, Dagestan ASSR. Situated on the laryksu River. Railroad station on the Gudermes-Baku line, 82 km northwest of Makhachkala. Population, 66,000 (1977; 23,000 in 1939). The food-processing industry is represented by a cannery, a dairy plant, and meat-packing, food-processing, and cereal-products combines. Khasav”urt also has an instrument-making plant, a brickyard, a machinery and repair plant, a plant producing reinforced concrete, a garment factory, and a furniture factory. The city has an agricultural technicum, a branch of the Makhachkala Construction Technicum, and a pedagogical school.
